The island guide: species, size and accessBook the walk if standing among the colony matters more than time and price; otherwise a boat tour shows the same island from the water for a fraction of the cost.
The walk wins on closeness and time with the penguins; the boat wins on price, day length and accessibility.

None of the three walk listings states a minimum age. According to Piratour, children aged 0–2 go free and children aged 3–11 pay a child rate, which suggests young children are accepted. The all-inclusive walk does not allow baby strollers or baby carriages, so small children must walk or be carried on the trails for about 1 hour. Confirm with the operator before booking for a toddler. Ask about children on the all-inclusive walk.
The walk is not recommended for travelers with reduced mobility. It involves a road transfer of about 1.5–2 hours each way, a 15-minute speedboat crossing and 1 hour on foot on marked paths, and the all-inclusive walk lists wheelchair users as not suitable. If walking or boarding small boats is difficult, one catamaran from the pier lists itself as wheelchair and stroller accessible and still passes Martillo Island. See the wheelchair-accessible catamaran.
The walk is not recommended during pregnancy, and the all-inclusive walk lists pregnant women as not suitable. The day combines long road transfers, a semi-rigid boat crossing and paths on the island. Several small-boat tours from Puerto Almanza carry the same warning. A catamaran from the tourist pier is the gentler way to see the colony, though some listings warn about seasickness. Boat tours compared.
Estancia Harberton is closed on Tuesdays, and both summer walks warn about it because the land route to the island passes through the estancia. Harberton is also closed on 25 December and 1 January, and one operator lists 25 December – 2 January. If your only free day is a Tuesday, confirm with the operator before booking, or choose a catamaran from the pier, which does not depend on Harberton. Check dates for the split-day walk.
Yes, but only with Gentoo penguins and for a shorter time. The winter landing runs from 1 July to 15 September, entirely by boat from the tourist pier, with about 30 minutes on the island. The operator counts 68 Gentoo breeding pairs and notes that the number you see varies. Magellanic penguins are present only from about October to March. Piratour also lists a winter walk from about July to mid-September, according to its own site. Book the winter Gentoo landing.
Dress for wind and rain: the all-inclusive walk asks you to bring warm clothing, rain gear and comfortable shoes. The same list adds sunglasses, a sun hat and sunscreen, since you spend the day outdoors on the Beagle Channel. Bring a passport or ID card and some cash. Large bags and luggage are not allowed on that tour, so pack a small daypack. See the full packing list.
The walk listings do not spell out a weather policy. The split-day walk promises a full refund if the penguin colony visit cannot be confirmed or operated, and a refund if the schedule shifts by more than 30 minutes and you decline before the tour date. The all-inclusive walk and the winter landing offer free cancellation, with the all-inclusive walk allowing it up to 24 hours before. Book with free cancellation.
Bookable walks start at $450 for the winter Gentoo landing and $530–549 for the summer options, as advertised on GetYourGuide on Oct 2026. The split-day walk does not include the Harberton entry fee, which you pay in pesos if the estancia is open; the fee for the 2026-27 season was not confirmed in our sources. Every walking and boat price compared.
The walk itself lasts 1 hour on the island in summer and about 30 minutes in winter, but the full day is much longer. The all-inclusive walk takes 8.5–9.5 hours. The split-day walk starts at 08:00 or 10:00 and returns at 7:45 PM or 9:30–9:45 PM. The winter landing takes about 7 hours from a 1:00 PM departure. See split-day walk times.
Book weeks ahead for the peak season, because the walk has a small daily quota and regularly sells out. The 2026-27 season dates were not confirmed in our sources, so check availability as soon as your trip dates are fixed. The all-inclusive walk lets you reserve now and pay later, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Reserve the all-inclusive walk.
